2016 GMC SAVANA CUTAWAY ENABLES EASY UPFITS FOR EVERY JOB

The GMC Savana Cutaway van is known for versatility, flexibility and durability, offering of its three available wheelbases, single or dual rear wheels and three engine choices – including the powerful Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel.

For 2016, the Savana Cutaway features a single rear wheel 9,900-pound GVWR (4,490 kg) on 139- and 159-inch wheelbase chassis, and an optional 10,100-pound (4,581 kg) GVWR. Dual-rear-wheel models start at 10,050 pounds (4,559 kg) GVWR and extend to 12,300 pounds (5,591 kg) GVWR. They are available on 139-, 159- and 177-inch wheelbase chassis. 

Also offered on the dual-rear-wheel are 4500 models that have a 14,200-pound (6,441 kg) GVWR, available with the 159- and 177-inch wheelbase chassis.

New for 2016 is OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, which includes a Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected all the time. The hotspot allows passengers to connect up to seven personal devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets to high-speed wireless Internet whenever the vehicle is on.

Savana powertrains: 6.6L Duramax diesel
The powerful Duramax turbo-diesel V-8 is offered in Savana Cutaway, delivering best-in-class torque and horsepower. Known by its “LGH” engine code, it is rated at 260 horsepower (194 kW) and 525 lb-ft of torque (711 Nm).


The LGH Duramax employs a robust EGR cooling system, along with revised turbocharger tuning that helps enhance EGR performance. It also has a large-capacity selective catalytic reduction system. In fact, the engine features the latest in emission control technology, making it the cleanest Duramax engine ever produced. NOx emissions are controlled via a Selective Catalyst Reduction aftertreatment system that uses urea-based Diesel (Emission) Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The DEF is housed in a 5.83-gallon (20 L) tank and needs to be replenished about every 5,000 miles (8,000 km). Electrically heated lines feed the DEF to the emission system to ensure adequate delivery in cold weather.

The Duramax also includes GM’s second-generation diesel particulate filter system. Unlike most competitors’ systems, the Duramax regenerates its diesel particulate filter using a downstream injection of diesel fuel directly into the exhaust stream and can travel up to 700 miles (1,125 km) between regenerations – a 300-mile (482 km) increase over the previous Duramax engine. The use of downstream injection also helps improve engine life by eliminating concerns about the possibility of diesel fuel contaminating engine oil, which can happen when fuel used for regeneration is introduced directly into the cylinder. 

Savana Cutaway also provides outstanding cold-weather performance, thanks to the Duramax’s microprocessor-controlled glow plugs, which are capable of a gas engine-like start performance in less than three seconds in temperatures as low as -20 degrees F (-29 o C), without a block heater. The engine has been developed to operate for at least 200,000 miles (322,000 km) on a rough-duty cycle without the need for a major overhaul. It is also backed with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
(Certain commercial and government fleet customers receive the 5 year/100,000 mile powertrain limited warranty.)

A fuel-operated heater is available for vans equipped with the Duramax 6.6L to quickly provide heat to the vehicle interior in cold weather. This seamlessly integrated system is designed into the Savana chassis, saving customers the time and labor of upfitting an aftermarket system. The electronically controlled, fuel-operated heater operates automatically, turning on and off within parameters that include outside air temperature, fuel level, coolant temperature and engine use. It features a self-contained, pressurized auxiliary coolant heater (with a surge tank) that uses diesel fuel to generate up to 17,200 Btu/h (5 kW) of heating energy.

The Duramax engine is backed by GM’s Hydra-Matic 6L90 heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission featuring Tow/Haul mode.


Gas engines
A 4.8L V-8 is standard on 3500 models and generates 285 horsepower (212 kW) and 295 lb-ft of torque (398 Nm), while a 6.0L V-8, available in a flex fuel configuration, is standard on 4500 models and available on other models. It is rated at 342 horsepower (255 kW) and 373 lb-ft of torque (506 Nm).

Each is part of GM’s legendary small-block engine family and designed for quiet operation, including:
•    Special friction-reducing polymer coating on piston skirts
•    Full-floating piston pins
•    Damping patch on the oil pan (externally mounted)
•    Timing chain tensioner
•    Quieter alternator.

Backing the engines’ quietness is the assurance of long-lasting performance. The engine family was validated under extreme conditions, with the 6.0L engine dynamometer-tested to the equivalent of 200,000 miles – 50,000 miles more than other engines in the family. The engines also feature many long-life engine components that can reduce maintenance intervals and costs. The iridium-tip spark plugs, engine coolant, accessory drive belt and sealing gaskets are some of these items.

Some of the stringent durability testing included cycling engines between the peak torque and peak horsepower rpm points – the equivalent of towing a heavy trailer up a steep grade – for 600 straight hours.

The engines are mated to the Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic transmission.


Additional powertrain special features include:
•    Dual 145-amp alternators are on Duramax-equipped models
•    diesel engine
•    220-amp alternators are available
•    600-CCA battery is standard with 6.0L engine; 770-CCA battery is available
•    Dual heavy-duty 770-CCA batteries are standard with Duramax-equipped models
•    Fuel-operated auxiliary heat generator is available with Duramax-equipped models
•    Cold-climate package with engine block heater is available on all models
•    High-idle switch for greater accessory performance at a job site is available on all models
•    Oil life monitor is standard on all models
•    Transmission cooler is standard on all models.

Chassis and suspension
Cutaway models are built on a strong, ladder-type full frame architecture. Varying frame sections support the 139-inch, 159-inch and 177-inch wheelbases. Soft-mount body-mount “donuts” and bolts, which attach upfit bodies to the chassis, are available on all models.

All Cutaway models feature an independent short-long arm (SLA) front suspension, power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with four-wheel anti-lock. At the rear is a hypoid drive axle and multi-leaf springs.

Additional chassis and suspension features include:
•    A locking rear differential is available on all models
•    Axle ratios include: 3.42, 3.54, 3.73 and 4.10.

Savana safety and crash-avoidance features
Savana is equipped with a host of safety features, including six standard air bags: frontal, head and side curtain, and thoracic air bags, which provide a higher level of protection in the event of a side impact or a vehicle rollover.

GM’s Environmental and Social Initiatives Land Company on Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Remains only automaker on North American index

DETROIT – General Motors was again ranked on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index for corporate sustainability leadership in the automotive industry. This is the second year GM has been selected as an index component and the company remains the only automaker on the North American index.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is the leading global benchmark for corporate sustainability. DJSI tracks leading sustainability-driven companies based on investment firm RobecoSAM’s analysis of financially relevant environmental, social and governance factors.

“The DJSI ranking demonstrates that GM is doing business with a greater sense of purpose,” said Craig Glidden, GM executive vice president public policy and general counsel. “This practice benefits our customers and employees, and helps us better serve the communities where we work around the world.”

GM’s score increased 5 points this year thanks to higher rankings in 14 of 22 categories, with perfect scores in climate strategy and brand management. GM also received a high score in the index’s new materiality category, which evaluates sustainability issues linked to business drivers.

Another major update to the DJSI methodology is an increased focus on human rights. Last year, GM joined the UN Global Compact, pledging to support and promote the compact’s 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.

Recently, GM Chairman and CEO Mary Barra committed to a vision of a decarbonized automotive industry. Convened by the World Economic Forum, Barra, as well as 13 other automotive CEOs, committed to the idea that safe and affordable automotive transportation is no longer just for a privileged few.

GM also launched its Do Your Part recycling initiative, collecting water bottles from six GM facilities and Flint, Michigan residents. The plastic is transformed through a supply web of 11 companies and philanthropic organizations into three new materials that benefit products, plants and people.

2016 GMC Canyon Diesel Tows, Camps Like a Champ



Ever since GM announced that the midsize Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon pickup trucks would receive a diesel engine, there's really been only one question on my mind: How well will they tow? I mean, we're not talking big, heavy-duty pickups with enormous V-8 diesel engines, dualie axles and jake brakes here. These are smaller, compact trucks that are used more as lifestyle vehicles than big workhorses. And while diesels are common in this style of truck all over the world, we haven't seen one in a smaller American pickup in decades.

GMC Leads Industry with New Rear Seat Reminder

All-new 2017 GMC Acadia introduces
 industry-first feature to help busy drivers

 

DETROIT — Life moves fast. There are a million things on everyone’s mind, and sometimes even the most organized among us need a little help remembering everything. The all-new 2017 GMC Acadia is helping to address this issue with the Rear Seat Reminder, a new, industry-first feature designed to remind drivers to check the back seat as they exit their vehicle under certain circumstances.

Each year in the U.S., about half of the children under age 14 who die of in-vehicle heatstroke do so as a result of being forgotten. Also, items left in the back seat are a target for theft. Nearly 23 percent of larceny in 2014 was from a motor vehicle, according to the FBI.

“Acadia drivers live busy lives with demanding schedules, and the Rear Seat Reminder helps protect the things we care about most,” said Tricia Morrow, GM global safety strategy engineer. “Whether it’s your lunch, laptop, pet or most importantly, your child, it’s easier than it seems to forget what’s in the back seat when moving between life’s events. With this new feature, we are leading the charge to address this ongoing problem.”

The Rear Seat Reminder works by monitoring the Acadia’s rear doors. The feature is intended to activate when either rear door is opened and closed within 10 minutes before the vehicle is started, or if they are opened and closed while the vehicle is running. Under these circumstances, the next time the vehicle is turned off after a door activation, the Acadia is designed to sound five audible chimes and display a message in the driver information center that reads, “Rear Seat Reminder / Look in Rear Seat.”

“General Motors has developed a new technology for the GMC Acadia, the Rear Seat Reminder, to give busy parents an important reminder to check the back seat before leaving the car,” said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide. “Technology alone cannot solve the issue of heatstroke when it comes to young children, but this new Acadia reminder can help. We must always remember that the safest way to protect a child from heatstroke is to never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.”

The feature cannot detect items in the backseat, so it is always important to check the rear seat prior to exiting the vehicle.

The industry-first feature is a standard feature on the all-new 2017 Acadia, a reimagined crossover aimed at the heart of the midsize segment.

GMC Canyon Extends Momentum with Broader 2017 Lineup

New Canyon Denali, All Terrain X expand choices,
offer new propulsion system

 

DETROIT – Building on the momentum of an 18-percent sales increase so far this year, GMC today announced a broader 2017 GMC Canyon lineup led by the new, range-topping Canyon Denali and new, off-road-inspired All Terrain X.

Like all GMC Denali models, the new Canyon Denali is distinguished by chrome exterior details and unique wheels, along with exclusive interior trim and content. It also features a new 3.6L V-6 engine that’s paired with a segment-first eight-speed automatic transmission.

This new propulsion system is offered across the 2017 Canyon lineup, including the new All Terrain X package, which takes the popular All Terrain model farther down the trail, with Goodyear DuraTrac all-terrain tires, all-weather floor liners and more. 

“Canyon continues to carve out its own niche as the only premium truck in the midsize segment,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of GMC Sales and Marketing. “With a broader 2017 Canyon lineup and the redesigned Acadia, GMC is offering more choices for finding the premium truck or SUV that matches customers’ design preferences and capability needs.”

The All Terrain model requires the new 3.6L V-6/eight-speed automatic propulsion system. The 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine is available.

3.6L V-6 and eight-speed automatic
The new 3.6L/eight-speed propulsion system offers stronger, more confident acceleration and smoother shift performance than the Canyon’s previous V-6/six-speed combination. This new combination focuses on refining everyday driving performance, including accelerating from a stop, passing on the highway and cruising at a constant speed.

The 3.6L leverages technologies such as continuously variable valve timing, direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation) to balance performance and efficiency. It is rated at an SAE-certified 308 hp (230 kW) and 275 lb-ft of torque (373 Nm).

Canyon’s new Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic complements the 3.6L with a technologically advanced design and control system that supports smoother, more refined performance. Smaller “steps” between the gears as the vehicle accelerates allow the transmission to shift quicker, with almost imperceptible upshifts.

The 8L45 eight-speed also has a wider 7.0 gear ratio that enables a numerically higher first gear ratio — helping drivers start off more confidently with a heavy load or when trailering — and numerically lower overdrive ratios that reduce engine rpm on the highway. A lower engine speed has two benefits: It can reduce fuel consumption to enhance efficiency and it reduces engine noise for a quieter cabin.

The new powertrain supports a 7,000-pound max trailering rating that is second in the segment only to the Canyon’s available 2.8L Duramax diesel, which is rated at 7,700 pounds.

The 2017 model year updates, including the new V-6 and eight-speed combination, will arrive at dealerships in the fourth quarter of this year.
