2016 GMC CANYON- New for 2016

New for 2016:
•    Enhanced GMC IntelliLink system featuring Apple CarPlay capability
•    2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine (late availability)
•    Rear-sliding window now standard on SLT and included in SLE Convenience Package

AWARD-WINNING GMC CANYON THRIVES AMONG 2016 MIDSIZE TRUCKS

GMC Canyon, the segment’s only premium midsize truck, raises the bar for everything from horsepower and efficiency to refinement – and its attributes are drawing accolades.

In 2015, Canyon won Cars.com Midsize Pickup Challenge for its segment-leading capabilities and efficiency, including the latest in safety features, cargo-hauling and trailering versatility. Cars.com also applauded the Canyon SLT, the segment’s only premium vehicle, for its performance with a full load, as well as its design and high-end materials.

Autoweek also honored Canyon as the “Best of the Best Truck for 2015,” while Wards Auto World recognized the Canyon as one of Ward’s 10 Best Interiors for 2015, based on criteria such as design harmony, ergonomics, materials, driver information, safety and comfort.

Canyon returns for 2016 with the segment’s best horsepower – 200 horsepower (149 kW) from a standard 2.5L I-4 and 305 horsepower (227 kW) from an available 3.6L V-6 – along with an available maximum trailering rating (when properly equipped) of 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg).

It also offers segment-best highway efficiency: EPA-estimated 27 mpg for 2.5L 2WD models and 26 mpg for 3.6L 2WD models, when properly equipped.

A new 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel engine will be offered later in 2016, offering even greater capability. More information will be available closer to the start of production.

Meanwhile, new phone integration technology on 2016 models enhances connectivity and promotes safer driving through Canyon’s next generation IntelliLink system. This new technology allows smartphone users to connect with applications such as navigation, hands-free text messaging, entertainment and news through IntelliLink’s display screen.

Canyon lineup
Canyon is offered in base, SLE and SLT models, in 2WD and 4WD, and with an aggressively styled All-Terrain package offered on SLE models. It includes 17-inch painted aluminum wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires, a body-color grille surround with horizontal chrome bars, a body-color rear bumper, front recovery hooks, hill descent control and specific suspension tuning. It also includes a power-adjustable front passenger seat.

Canyon is also the only truck in the segment to offer AutoTrac automatic four-wheel drive, which allows the driver to select manual 4WD engagement or automatic engagement.

Customer-focused technologies include available OnStar 4G LTE connectivity, segment-first available driver alert features such as forward collision alert, lane departure warning and a standard rear-vision camera.

OnStar with 4G LTE and its built-in Wi-Fi hotspot provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the car is on and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial, whichever comes first.
When it comes to capability, a superior ride and the best in technology and entertainment, nothing quite lives up to the professional grade qualities of GMC Canyon.

Capability and comfort abound
The 2016 Canyon is pure GMC throughout the vehicle, with a quiet, refined interior distinguished by exceptional materials and a commanding exterior presence that emulates the technology-infused design aesthetic.

Bold front-end styling incorporates standard projector beam headlamps and GMC’s LED signature lighting. Three body configurations are offered: An extended cab model with a 6’2” bed, a crew cab with a 5’2” bed, and a crew cab with a 6’2” bed. With the tailgate down, the longer bed allows eight-foot-long items to be hauled within the vehicle.

From a refinement standpoint, the Canyon features triple-sealed doors inlaid in the body sides for improved aerodynamic performance and a quiet interior. It also features the segment’s first active aero grille shutters, which close at certain highway speeds to enhance efficiency through improved aerodynamics. An aluminum hood reduces mass and improves the front-to-rear weight balance.

Other features include:
•    Segment-first CornerStep rear bumper design, which is standard. It is chrome on all models, except All Terrain, which is body-color
•    Segment-first EZ Lift-and-Lower locking tailgate that uses an internal torsion bar to make raising the tailgate easier with one hand, and a damper for more-controlled lowering. It is standard on SLE and SLT models, and available on base models
•    Thirteen reconfigurable and four stationary tie-down locations throughout the bed for use with available, removable cargo tie-down rings
•    Available factory-installed spray-in bed liner
•    Four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife™ rotors that can double the service life.

Work and lifestyle accessories were developed in tandem with the Canyon to match the truck’s capabilities with integrated functionality and with designs that complement its distinctive styling. The lineup includes the GearOn™ system and a variety of accessories designed to make cargo hauling easier and more convenient, as well as exterior styling enhancements and interior items.

The GearOn™ system is designed to fit perfectly within the bed, for significant storage and hauling flexibility. It is upgradable, with modular cargo dividers and tiered storage to accommodate 4- x 8-foot sheets of plywood above the wheelhouses. It also uses the box’s four permanent and 13 tie-down provisions to allow for a variety of secure and convenient cargo storage options.

Interior highlights
Canyon’s interior is well-equipped and comfortable, all while delivering the connectivity features essential to customers with active lifestyles. The cabin also boasts exceptional attention to detail and premium materials such as soft-touch materials and aluminum trim on the instrument panel of SLE and SLT models.

“There’s an elevation in design and materials in the Canyon’s interior that reflects GMC’s precision in craftsmanship,” said Helen Emsley, executive director of Global GMC Design. “Details such as authentic aluminum trim and high-quality stitching reinforce Canyon’s position as the segment’s only premium offering, while features such as multiple USB ports and seats designed for long-haul comfort are thoughtful elements.”

The interior design blends elements of Canyon’s full-size sibling, the Sierra, with those typically found in more personal vehicles such as sports coupes – including standard front bucket seats and a center console with a floor-mounted shifter.

Comfort is enhanced with technologies, connectivity and other features that support owners’ daily and recreational lives, including a 3.5-inch-diagonal driver information screen in the instrument cluster (4.2-inch-diagonal multi-color display on SLE and SLT).

Interior colors include Jet Black, Jet Black/Dark Ash, Cocoa/Dune and Jet Black/Cobalt Red (All Terrain). Additional content for Canyon’s base, SLE and SLT models includes:

Phone integration technology
New for Canyon in 2016, GMC’s IntelliLink system with an 8-inch-diagonal color touchscreen is compatible with Apple CarPlay, a phone integration technology that puts iPhone features (iPhone 5 and later) on the display in a smart, simple manner. Apple CarPlay makes it easy to connect to the features smartphone users rely on most.

The features allow customers to display select apps onto and control them through the touchscreen interface of GMC’s IntelliLink system. Many features can be controlled via voice commands through a button on the steering wheel, helping drivers spend more time with eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Apple CarPlay supported apps include Phone, Messages, Maps, Music and compatible third-party apps. A full list of those apps can be found at Apple.com/ios/carplay.

Android Auto compatibility will be available later in the 2016 model year.

Connectivity on the road
GMC IntelliLink is standard on SLE and SLT models, and available on the base model. It combines with OnStar to bring infotainment technology to Canyon as more and more consumers have smartphones. IntelliLink extends the OnStar experience from safety and security to information and entertainment by seamlessly integrating the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that hand-held phones may be safely stowed while driving.

Enhanced connectivity and convenience with IntelliLink includes text message support and Siri Eyes Free. With text message support, the driver can be alerted to new messages and can have them read aloud, view and respond to them with preset messages by voice (functionality depends on the smartphone). Siri Eyes Free enables iPhone 4S and later users to access Siri via the steering wheel controls and check calendar entries, have text messages read and respond to them, place calls or call up music.

Android phone users can also use the steering wheel controls to access their phone’s voice recognition features.

Additional IntelliLink features include:
•    Hands-free voice control system, which allows simple voice commands to initiate phone calls and select radio stations or media from portable MP3 players and smart phones
•    Pandora Internet radio allows users to create personalized radio stations based on favorite artists or genres (data rates apply)
•    USB connectivity adds the ability to play music files directly from flash memory devices, and gives the customer the ability to update IntelliLink with future enhancements.

Connectivity abounds in the Canyon with OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot. It provides a mobile hub for drivers and passengers to stay connected. The hotspot is on whenever the vehicle is on and comes with a three-month/three-gigabyte data trial, whichever comes first.

4G LTE is the most current and fastest mobile data network – 10 times faster than 3G and 100 times faster than the 2G network. With OnStar, customers have a powerful antenna built right in to the vehicle's electrical system.

At the time of purchase, six months of OnStar Guidance includes all of OnStar’s advisor-based safety and security features, including Automatic Crash Response and Stolen Vehicle Assistance, as well as Turn-by-Turn navigation.

Five years of OnStar Basic Plan includes RemoteLink Key Fob Services, allowing owners to remotely start and lock/unlock a car (if properly equipped), and activate the horn and lights from anywhere with a data connection. It also includes OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, which runs monthly checks of vehicle systems – including the engine, transmission and anti-lock brakes – and sends a diagnostic update to the owner via email; and Dealer Maintenance Notification, which sends a diagnostic report directly to a preferred dealer to simplify service scheduling. Basic plan does not include any emergency services.

Strength and capabilities
GMC Canyon delivers the capability expected of a GMC truck, including offering a greater maximum payload – 1,620 pounds (735 kg) – than competitors and the segment’s best trailering rating: 7,000 pounds (3,175 kg), when properly equipped.

A fully boxed perimeter frame provides the strength to support its capabilities, and a ride designed to be smooth and quiet. Like the full-size Sierra’s frame, Canyon features three sections – or bays – with specific strength and support characteristics, including a front bay made of hydroformed side rails and an integrated four-point front axle mounting system designed to reduce vibration.

A coil-over-shock front suspension and the segment’s first electric power steering system help give the Canyon a very responsive driving quality, with a direct feel to driver inputs.

The front suspension uses aluminum steering knuckles that are low in mass and high in strength, contributing to the responsive driving experience and enhancing efficiency. The electric power steering system also enhances efficiency because it does not draw power from the engine. The Canyon has a tight turning radius of 41 feet (12.6 meters), making it easier to maneuver when parking or backing into tight spots, such as garages or campsites.

The rear axle is available with the GM’s venerable “G80” locking differential, which gives drivers a traction advantage when needed and everyday comfort when it’s not. It reacts in milliseconds in low-traction situations to improve safety and confidence on wet, snowy or muddy surfaces. Without driver input of any kind, the rear axle engages when a wheel speed difference of 100 rpm or more is detected between the left and right wheels, providing instant traction for confident driving. During normal driving conditions, the differential functions as a conventional light-bias limited-slip axle.

The G80 axle is standard on SLT and 4WD SLE models, as well as the All-Terrain package. It is available on other configurations.

Canyon is also offered with AutoTrac automatic four-wheel drive. It’s a segment-exclusive feature, employing an electronically controlled, two-speed transfer case that allows the driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD. The driver can select four modes, 2WD, Auto, 4WD HI, or 4WD Lo. By selecting Auto mode, the transfer case will operate in 2WD and will automatically apply traction to the front wheels (4WD) when the vehicle senses wheel slippage.

Duralife™ brake rotors
Four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston front calipers are standard on Canyon and feature segment-first Duralife™ brake rotors. They can offer up to double the service life and enhance braking performance thanks to a GM-exclusive process that protects against rust that, over time, can lead to steering wheel shudder. It involves super-heating the rotors to more than 1,000 degrees F (560 C) for an entire day in a special oven, where the nitrogen-rich atmosphere promotes nitrogen atoms to bond to the rotors’ surfaces, hardening and strengthening them.

The vented front brake rotors measure 12.2 inches (310 mm) in diameter and are complemented by 12.75-inch (324 mm) rear rotors. They’re optimized for the Canyon’s mass, wheel size and other chassis dynamics.

Canyon also features auto grade braking, which uses the engine and transmission controls to slow the vehicle on a long downgrade, helping maintain vehicle speed and reducing the need for the driver to use the brakes.

Powertrain prowess
Canyon delivers the most horsepower in its segment and the best V-6 efficiency, allowing owners to haul and tow more while using less fuel than competitors’ midsize trucks.

A 2.5L I-4 is standard and SAE-certified at 200 horsepower (149 kW) and 191 lb-ft of torque (259 Nm), with approximately 90 percent of the peak torque available from 2,000 rpm to 6,200 rpm. It also offers EPA-estimated 27 mpg on the highway (2WD), when properly equipped.

Canyon also offers a 3.6L V-6 certified at 305 horsepower (227 kW) and 269 lb-ft of torque (365 Nm) – and an EPA-estimated 26 mpg on the highway (2WD), when properly equipped.

Both of Canyon’s engines are based on award-winning engine families and tuned to deliver the low-rpm torque customers depend on for hauling and towing. Each incorporates features that enhance smoothness and quietness, contributing to the new truck’s exceptional refinement; and each is backed by a six-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is available with the 2.5L engine in base extended cab/2WD models.

Advanced technologies including direct injection and continuously variable valve timing, improve power and efficiency. An aluminum block, forged-steel crankshaft, dual-overhead camshafts and jet-spray piston cooling are additional engine traits.

Safety features
With 360 degrees of available active and passive safety technologies, Canyon is designed to help keep occupants safe on the road, with standard features including:
•    Six air bags, including head curtain side air bags that can also reduce the risk of occupant ejection
•    Large rearview mirrors and rear-vision camera system for greater visibility
•    StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, trailer sway control, hill start assist and hill descent control (All Terrain).

A Driver Alert Package is available on SLE and SLT models (except All Terrain), and includes segment-first Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, with innovation and engineering excellence built into all GMC vehicles. The brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC’s highest-volume vehicle, the Sierra pickup, is the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market, and the first full-size pickup to receive the highest-possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration changed its New Car Assessment Program for the 2011 model year. Mismatched Tires Steer Toward Winter Trouble

 By Bruce Smith

As we head into fall it's a good time to start thinking about how to outfit your pickup truck with winter tires.

We know some pickup owners try to save a few dollars by swapping in more aggressive tires on the rear of their pickups to improve winter traction, or they buy two new tires instead of four to keep expenses down.

We're here to say those owners are headed in the wrong direction.

At least that's the expert opinion of Mark Cox, head instructor and director of the Bridgestone Winter Driving School in Steamboat Springs, Colo.

"You should always install winter tires on your vehicle in sets of four, whether you have a rear-, front- or all-wheel-drive vehicle," Cox said. "Using two different types of tires on your vehicle will negatively affect its handling."

Cox explained that putting tires with better traction on the rear of a pickup — or any vehicle — will cause the back to push the front in corners, which is called "understeer."

Putting better tires in front will have the opposite: effect, oversteer, where the rear tires are likely to lose grip before the front.

Cox also said the handling effects of mismatched tires applies to all road surfaces and driving conditions, adding that low-traction surfaces like snow, mud and wet pavement will magnify the effects because the fine line between vehicle balance and traction are at their narrowest margins in those circumstances.

To maximize vehicle control and safety always buy tires in matched sets of four and rotate them frequently to ensure all four contact patches — the area of tread that touches the ground — have the same level of traction.

We recommend you don't shortchange your pickup truck's safety by swapping out just a pair of tires when upgrading to a full set would be a better choice.

Sierra Denali’s high-tech interior also features an exclusive eight-inch customizable driver display that can show relevant settings, audio and navigation information in the instrument panel. Sierra Denali’s standard eight-inch Color Touch navigation radio with IntelliLink serves as the main hub for Bluetooth-connected phones and portable devices connected through five standard USB ports.

Sierra HD design and exterior features
Sierra HD trucks are the face of GMC’s Professional Grade aesthetic. All models feature a bold power-dome hood, HID headlamps and GMC’s signature LED lighting (daytime running lamps).

The bodies on all models feature inlaid doors, which fit into recesses in the bodyside to help reduce wind noise for a quieter cab, and the double cab body features front-hinged rear doors with outside pull handles at the rear, for easy access in tight parking spaces.

Sierra HDs’ strong 6’6” and 8’ cargo boxes are designed to last longer with tough, rolled-steel floors, while offering great flexibility. They come with a two-tier loading design and offer more than four feet of loading space between the wheel houses, allowing standard 4’ x 8’ sheets of plywood to stack flatly on the box floor.

Available body-style/ box-length configurations include:
  •     Regular cab with 8’ box – 2500HD and 3500HD
  •     Double cab with 6’6” box – 2500HD only
  •     Double cab with 8’ box – 2500HD and 3500HD
  •     Crew cab with 6’6” box – 2500HD and 3500HD
  •     Crew cab with 8’ box – 2500HD and 3500HD.
A factory-installed spray-in bed liner is available (standard on Denali) and LED cargo box lighting is standard on SLE, SLT and Denali models.

The CornerStep rear bumper is standard on all models and provides easier access when it’s time to climb in the box or retrieve items from it. It features integrated steps at each corner designed to accommodate large boots, with textured pads for sure-footed grip.

Additionally, a new remote locking tailgate is standard on SLE, SLT and Denali – and is available on the base model.

The EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate is standard on SLE, SLT and Denali models, along with LED cargo box lighting. With the EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate, an internal torsion bar reduces the effort to raise, while a rotary damper allows for a controlled and more gradual lowering motion when opening it.

Sierra HD interior details
The Sierra’s interior is roomy, quiet and functional, with a strong cab structure the foundation for its refinement. Nearly two-thirds of the cab is made of high-strength steel, while shear-style body mounts are used to tune out both up-and-down and side-to-side movement for a quiet, comfortable ride. Double and crew cab models have a set of hydraulic body mounts to further isolate the cabs.

The instrument panel has an intuitive six-gauge cluster. Standard models include a 3.5-inch driver information center display in the middle of the instrument cluster, with a 4.2-inch color driver information center display, for vehicle and infotainment data, standard on SLE, SLT and Sierra Denali. Ambient lighting highlights all functional areas, such as the “4x4” and headlamp switches, as well as the radio, for easier viewing at night.

All models have extensive interior storage, tailored to the way customers use their trucks. The center console – available on vehicles with front bucket seats – offers nearly 1 cubic foot (24.5 liters) of combined storage space, with the depth and width to conceal a laptop computer. Additionally, the locking console accommodates hanging files for owners who use their truck as a rolling office, as well as controls for overhead ambient lighting, map pockets along the side, movable cup holders and reconfigurable compartments. Proven Duramax turbo-diesel
The Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel is available across the lineup and has proven itself with a strong record of performance, capability and durability. It led the industry with first-in-class common-rail fuel injection and aluminum heads with a six-bolts-per-cylinder design.

It is rated at 397 horsepower (296 kW) at 3,000 rpm and 765 lb.-ft. of torque (1,037 Nm) at 1,600 rpm, contributing to their tremendous capability – including a maximum towing rating of 23,200 pounds on Sierra 3500HD. Horsepower is reduced slightly for some commercial chassis cab models.

Architectural features include a rigid cast iron cylinder block with induction-hardened cylinder bores; four-bolt, cross-drilled main bearing caps; forged steel, nitride-hardened crankshaft; aluminum pistons with jet-spray oil cooling; aluminum cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder; water-cooled turbocharger; integrated oil cooler and a charge-cooled turbocharging system.

The Duramax’s variable vane geometry turbocharger makes downhill towing less stressful, with an integrated exhaust brake system. Matched with the Allison 1000 transmission, it creates added backpressure in the exhaust, resulting in negative torque during deceleration and downhill driving, enhancing driver control and prolonging brake pad life.

The Duramax also provides outstanding cold-weather performance, with  microprocessor-controlled glow plugs capable of gas engine-like start performance in less than three seconds in temperatures as low as -20 degrees F (-29 C), without a block heater.

Advanced emission control technology makes the Duramax one of the cleanest diesels in the segment. NOx emissions are controlled via a Selective Catalyst Reduction aftertreatment system that uses urea-based Diesel (Emission) Exhaust Fluid (DEF), which is housed in a 5.3-gallon (20 L) tank and needs to be replenished about every 5,000 miles (8,000 km). Electrically heated lines feed the DEF to the emission system to ensure adequate delivery in cold weather.

The system also incorporates GM’s second-generation diesel particulate filter system. Unlike most of the competition, the Duramax regenerates its diesel particulate filter using a downstream injection of diesel fuel directly into the exhaust stream and can travel up to 700 miles (1,125 km) between regenerations. The use of downstream injection helps improve engine life by eliminating concerns surrounding the possibility of diesel fuel contaminating engine oil, which can happen when fuel used for regeneration is introduced directly into the cylinder.

Allison 1000 transmission
The Allison 1000 backs the Duramax engine with features that support its tremendous torque with driver-control features that make hauling and towing easier – including the smart exhaust brake system. It features a class-first range selection function, which allows the driver to easily select the desired gears to match driving conditions, such as towing a trailer on a steep grade.

The Allison 1000’s six-speed configuration also contributes to greater efficiency, with lower engine speed on the highway. Both the fifth and sixth gears are overdrives (turning slower than engine speed), with a sixth-gear ratio of 0.62:1. A lower cruising rpm also contributes to a quieter interior on the highway.

Additional features include:

  •     Power take off – It offers 250 lb.-ft. of torque for excellent performance in PTO applications, such as snowplows. There are two locations (right- and left-hand sides of the transmission) for PTO accessories – such as hydraulic pumps – to be attached on the transmission
  •     Driver Shift Control – This feature allows the driver to manually select and hold a gear to satisfy a variety of driving scenarios. The easy tap-up/tap-down shift control holds the desired gear, but also protects the engine by inhibiting downshifts when the engine speed is above allowable rpm limits.
  •     Tow/haul mode – The driver-selectable tow/haul mode provides greater driver control and trailering performance in certain conditions, such as steep grades. When engaged, shift schedules are optimized so that the system locks the torque converter earlier to minimize heat gain and to take greater advantage of engine braking when vehicle is traveling downhill.
  •     Cab warm-up (elevated idle) – In certain low-temperature circumstances, the engine speed is raised and the transmission increases the load on the engine, allowing the engine to produce heat quicker and warm up the truck’s interior faster. The idle speed varies with the engine coolant temperature and the normal idle resumes when it reaches 154 degrees F (68 C). The feature is also enabled when the engine is started via remote starting.
  •     Easy maintenance – The Allison 1000 has an easily removable, spin-on filter with a long, 60,000-mile change interval. Another internal filter is rated for the life of the transmission. Some competitors’ transmissions offer longer filter change intervals, but require more intensive, time-consuming change procedures that include removing the oil pan.
Smart exhaust brake system
The highly integrated, driver-selectable exhaust brake system uses the compression power of the Duramax engine to improve vehicle control and reduce brake pad wear. When the exhaust brake is engaged in cruise mode, exhaust cruise grade braking will help the cruise control system maintain the desired vehicle speed when travelling downhill, keeping the driver from having to apply the brakes and exit cruise control to maintain speed.

When the exhaust brake is engaged in non-cruise mode, the transmission and the exhaust brake deliver the correct amount of braking to assist in vehicle control, regardless of vehicle load. The system provides more engine braking with this feature for a heavier vehicle, for example.

Exhaust grade braking is one of the best examples of the Duramax engine and Allison transmission working as a seamless powertrain unit. It is a smart system that varies the amount of brakes needed for the vehicle, load and grade. The engagement of the system is smooth and quiet, while its performance enhances the driver’s feeling of control.

V-8 power is standard
The standard engine in all 2500HD and 3500HD models is the proven 6.0L FlexFuel V-8, which can run on gas, E85 or a mixture of both. It’s rated at 360 horsepower (268 kW) and 380 lb.-ft. of torque (515 Nm) on gas. It is also offered in a bi-fuel version and is rated at 301 horsepower (225 kW) and 333 lb.-ft. (452 Nm) on CNG.

The 6.0L is part of the legendary small block engine family, which was introduced in 1955. All iterations share basic architectural cues, including 4.400-inch cylinder bore centers and cam-in-block valve actuation. It is a simpler, lighter and more-compact design than many overhead-cam engines, with intrinsic attributes well-suited to the performance heavy-duty truck customers demand – particularly torque that’s developed early and maintained over a broad rpm range.

In fact, approximately 90 percent of peak torque available at only 2,000 rpm, for confidence and ease of operation with a full load or trailer, particularly on steep grades. Additional engine highlights include:

  •     Deep-skirt iron cylinder block with cross-bolted main caps for strength, durability and refinement
  •     High-flow aluminum cylinder heads that help produce more power and sustain longer across the rpm range
  •     Polymer-coated pistons with full-floating wrist pins that offer lower friction, for greater performance and efficiency
  •     Steel camshaft for long-term performance and durability
  •     Steel roller rockers add stiffness, allowing greater engine speed with less vibration
  •     Hydraulic roller lifters reduce friction for greater efficiency and wear resistance
  •     Steel camshaft for long-term performance and durability
  •     Regulated voltage control that enhances efficiency by reducing the draw on the alternator
  •     Coil-near-plug ignition features an individual coil for each spark plug to deliver maximum voltage and consistent spark density, with no variation between cylinders.
Heavy-duty foundation and vehicle control technologies
All Sierra HD models feature fully boxed frame assemblies – 18 different assemblies that accommodate more than 150 possible vehicle configurations across the lineup.

A short-long arm/torsion bar front suspension features forged steel upper control arms and precision-machined cast iron lower control arms. Five different torsion bar rates support five different front gross axle weight ratings to help stabilize the range of trim heights of various models under load – including snow plows – while enhancing appearance, handling, durability, tire wear and alignment.

At the rear, an asymmetrical leaf-spring design minimizes axle hop and enhances traction control efficiency. A two-stage leaf-spring design is used on 2500HD models and three-stage design is employed on 3500HD model.

Sierra HD’s advanced vehicle control technologies are designed to make tough jobs easier and more comfortable, while also contributing to a safe driving experience, particularly when hauling cargo or towing a trailer.

StabiliTrak electronic stability control is standard on all single-rear-wheel models and 3500HD dual-rear-wheel models. It incorporates trailer sway control and hill start assist. Additionally, available cruise control, auto grade braking, and diesel exhaust brake features help the vehicle maintain a set speed up and down grades, even when towing a heavy trailer.

With the diesel exhaust brake feature, the turbocharger is used to smoothly and quietly create additional backpressure in the engine to help slow the vehicle. The combination of the exhaust brake and the automatic transmission downshifts helps the driver maintain the desired speed, even on steep grades.

New Digital Steering Assist – standard on SLE and SLT double cab and crew cab models, as well as Denali – also enhances driver control, maneuverability and highway stability. It adapts technology similar to active rack-and-pinion systems for the Sierra HD’s recirculating ball power steering system, providing corrections to enhance stability on the highway, enhance stability control assistance and more. It also helps make Sierra HDs feel more maneuverable and responsive to the driver.

A rear-vision camera system is standard on SLE, SLT and Denali, providing a view of items behind the vehicle. It can also assist with lining up in front of a trailer.

GM Lansing Delta Township Plant Builds 2 Millionth Vehicle

White Frost Tricoat Buick Enclave
is milestone large crossover

LANSING, Mich. – A 2016 Buick Enclave, painted in White Frost Tricoat, rolled off the production line at General Motors’ Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant today, the 2 millionth vehicle produced at the automaker’s newest assembly plant in North America.
"This milestone directly reflects the dedication and hard work that our employees put into these crossovers every day,” said Mike Trevorrow, Lansing regional plant manager. “This team has established a strong foundation since opening to enable us to produce our 2 millionth vehicle in nine years, which is quite an accomplishment.”
Opened in 2006, Lansing Delta Township Assembly blends best practices and the newest technology in one facility. It was the first automotive manufacturing facility in the world to be a Gold Certified Leader in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
Since starting production, Lansing Delta Township has manufactured the Saturn Outlook, Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Acadia Denali and Buick Enclave. A white Outlook was the first vehicle produced on May 24, 2006.
The plant currently employs approximately 3,200 employees on three shifts.
GM has announced more than $580 million in investments for Lansing Delta Township facility over the last two years, including $63 million in 2014 to expand the plant by nearly 263,000 square feet and $520 million earlier this year for tooling and equipment associated with future new vehicle programs.
“Producing the 2 millionth vehicle would not be possible without the great people we have here,” said UAW Local 602 President Bill Reed.
While most vehicles follow somewhat of a bell curve for sales during their lifecycle, the Enclave has continued an upward trajectory after more than seven years. Minor dips in 2009 and 2012 reflected overall trends in the recovering auto industry, but record-setting 2014 sales represented a 39-percent increase over the Enclave’s first full year of production. As of June 2015, more than 500,000 Enclave models had been sold worldwide.
“The Enclave led Buick’s product renaissance, redefining what consumers should expect from a full-size luxury crossover,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick. “It is fitting that an Enclave is the 2 millionth vehicle to roll off the line in Lansing, demonstrating continued consumer demand.”
This milestone for Lansing Delta Township is part of GM’s celebration of 500 million vehicles built globally, more than any other automaker.
