10 Reasons Why Engines Lose Power Over Time

There are four things a gasoline engine requires to generate power and almost any engine problem will come down to something relating to one of these four factors. 1. Air 2. Fuel 3. Compression 4. Spark

Dirty Air Filter
A clogged air filter makes the engine work harder to pull in air, and can restrict the maximum amount of air let in. Less air means less power.

Exhaust Restrictions
The engine will have to work harder to push out exhaust gases, limiting power. Catalytic converters can clog up on engines with an improper air/fuel mixture or as a result of fuel additives reacting within. Mufflers can also fail internally, and alterations of the internal piping can result in an airflow restriction.

Fuel Injectors
Deposits can build up on the injectors over time from heat soak or poor fuel. Small restrictions can cause the O2 sensors to read a lean mixture, and so more fuel will be added to compensate. This can result in a rich mixture for the cylinders without injector problems, or even misfiring if the injector isn’t capable of injecting enough fuel.

Fuel Pumps
Overtime the fuel pump can wear out, but it might not necessarily fail catastrophically. While it may still be able to supply fuel at lower pressures, it may begin to struggle to provide fuel at higher pressures or for longer durations.

Worn Piston Rings
One of the major things that can happen over time is the piston rings will wear down, and this will allow for blow-by. Some of the high pressure air and fuel mixture combusting will pass by the pistons and travel along the cylinder walls into the crank case. This is pressure that should be pressing the piston down, so power is lost. It also means less compression as some of the air can escape as the piston travels upward on the intake stroke.

Carbon Deposits On Intake Valves/Valve Seats
If carbon deposits build up on the valves or valve seats, this can prevent the valves from closing properly. If an intake valve cannot fully close, it will allow air to escape during the compression stroke, effectively lowering the compression ratio.

Carbon Deposits On The Piston
If deposits build on the piston or cylinder walls, these deposits can create hot spots. These hot spots can result in engine knock if conditions allow for it. If the engine is capable, it will retard the ignition timing to reduce the likelihood of knock. By retarding the ignition timing, power is lost.

Fouled Spark Plugs
Spark plugs can build deposits with time. Inconsistent spark plug firing means you’re likely to misfire. Maintaining clean plugs ensures that the spark part of the equation doesn’t result in a loss of power.

Next-Generation GMC Canyon to Bolster Off-Road Performance with AT4X

A new standard in advanced off-road performance to be revealed summer 2022

DETROIT – Today, GMC teased the next-generation Canyon mid-size truck and confirmed the introduction of the AT4X trim to the Canyon lineup. The Canyon will become the second vehicle in GMC’s lineup to adopt the AT4X trim – GMC’s off-road optimized performance trim that offers serious capability and uncompromising refinements.

The current generation Canyon debuted in 2014. Since then, GMC has upgraded the mid-size truck over the years to include the AT4 trim and an off-road performance package that adds a 1-inch suspension leveling kit, off-road rocker panel protection, and front and mid skid plates. Most recently, GMC revealed the Canyon AT4 concept last year, which included a number of off-roading and overlanding accessories.

The next-generation Canyon AT4X signals the next chapter for GMC’s mid-size truck with the teaser previewing the Canyon AT4X’s badging, rocker protectors and 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels.

GMC will reveal the next-generation Canyon including Canyon AT4X in summer 2022.

AT4X: The peak in premium off-roading performance

First introduced on the 2022 GMC Sierra, the AT4X trim is the off-road optimized evolution of GMC’s increasingly popular AT4 sub-brand.

Off-Road Performance Edition Takes GMC Canyon AT4 to New Heights

Suspension leveling kit, rocker panel protectors and aluminum skid plates among features that elevate the confidence and capability of the Canyon AT4

DETROIT – Today, GMC announced the new 2021 GMC Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition, which enhances the Canyon AT4 and enables customers to confidently venture into rugged off-road environments, all while maintaining the premium comforts they have come to expect from GMC.

“When customers are looking for a capable off-road truck, we know that they want improved vehicle height as well as additional protection,” said GMC Marketing Director Rich Latek. “Whether it’s tackling die-hard off-road courses or embarking on a weekend adventure, the Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition provides an improved approach angle, enhanced maneuverability and underbody protection to key parts of the truck, while still delivering a premium GMC experience.”

When the Canyon AT4 debuted in January, its bolder design and premium detailing combined with confidence-inspiring capability signaled the brand’s continued commitment to offering premium, off-road capable vehicles.

Standard equipment on the Canyon AT4 includes 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac® tires, an off-road tuned suspension package with Advanced Hill Descent Control System and a four-wheel drive system with Eaton G80 Rear Automatic Locking Differential.

The Canyon AT4 Off-Road Performance Edition builds on this foundation to provide even more capability for drivers whether they’re venturing far off-road or navigating a trail. A suspension leveling kit and the removal of the front air dam improve the truck’s approach angle by more than 35 percent to nearly 30 degrees.

This increased approach angle is paired with rocker panel protectors and performance front and mid skid plates to provide increased off-road capability and maneuverability. The skid plates are made from sturdy, 5/32-inch aluminum and help protect the lower radiator, front differential, steering gear and oil pan. In combination with the transfer case shield standard on the Canyon AT4, the Off-Road Performance Edition offers the protection to the majority of the truck’s powertrain that off-road enthusiasts expect.

The Off-Road Performance Edition elevates the bold styling and premium refinement of the Canyon AT4 with the addition of:

Unique 17-inch Gloss Black wheels

Carbon Black AT4 logos

Gloss Black performance exhaust tip

After a day of off-road adventure, additional protection for the interior and the truck bed is provided in the form of accessory floor liners and spray-in bedliner.
