9 Reasons To Keep Your Tow-Behind Air Compressor

dreamstime_xxl_165151817

Tow-behind air compressors have been popular in many industries, including construction and utilities, for decades. This equipment made it easy for contractors and operators to ensure they were able to take their air compressor with them to the job site.

Today, owners, operators, and fleet managers have more options for mobile compressed air than just tow-behind air compressors. Manufacturers continue to innovate with a variety of options, from hydraulic, gas, and diesel powered above-deck air compressors, UNDERHOOD™ air compressors, and underdeck PTO-driven air compressor systems. But even with these innovative air compressor solutions, which pack a lot of power into compact packages, many

people still have a problem letting go of their trusty tow-behind air compressors. Here are 9 reasons to keep your tow-behind air compressor:

9. ENJOY THE CHALLENGE OF DRIVING AND PARKING WITH A TRAILER

Your experience towing your bulky air compressor has given you the skills of a precision driver! You’ve successfully merged onto busy freeways, reversed without jack-knifing, and managed to find parking in even the most crowded job sites. You have a sense of pride in the skills you’ve honed over the years of navigating your truck and trailer in all sorts of tricky (and frankly, stressful!) situations.

8. TAKE YOUR TIME TRAVELLING TO JOB SITES

Trailers can hinder your access to job sites, especially mobile service work in remote or off-road areas. If you enjoy taking extra time and care to navigate your way to hard-to-reach job sites, then it’s best to stick with your tow-behind.

7. MONOPOLIZE YOUR HITCH

tow-behind-on-hitchYour truck came with a tow hitch for a reason, so you’re going to use it! Now you can always use your tow hitch for your air compressor. If you need more equipment, then you will have to have another vehicle and driver sent out to bring all the required equipment to the same spot. That means the second truck will have the opportunity to use its hitch too.

If you feel like doing it all yourself, you can make two trips to the job site—one to drop off your air compressor, and one to drop off the rest of your equipment. Driving around is fun!

6. ONLY TRAVEL WITH YOUR AIR COMPRESSOR SOMETIMES

Every service job will present you with the opportunity to guess: will I need my air compressor for this job? You can bet on the odds of whether you’ll need to bring your tow-behind with you to the job site or not. Keep track of how many times you guess right, and how many times you must turn around to go back and collect your trailer.

5. SPEND LOTS OF TIME TAKING EXTRA SAFETY PRECAUTIONS & MEASURES

We hope everyone is passionate about workplace safety, and if you have a tow-behind air compressor, you’ll get to indulge this passion practically every day. Tow-behind air compressors have a lot of parts to check frequently. You’ll need to ensure the hitch, taillights, and tires are all in working condition. If any of these parts are failing, then you’ll get to spend part of your day fixing them, instead of actually getting down to work. If you’re a procrastinator, this is the best!

It also takes vehicles pulling heavy tow-behind air compressors longer to stop. To be able to stop quickly and safely, you’ll have to drive at reduced speeds whenever you’re towing your air compressor. You can learn and observe tow bar regulations and adjust your driving to make up for a larger blind spot.

In addition to all the safety checks you’ll enjoy doing, you’ll also have the opportunity come up with safety measures to ensure thieves don’t steal your tow-behind. It’s much easier to steal a tow-behind than to steal an above-deck air compressor, or a vehicle integrated compressor, like an UNDERHOOD or a transmission-mounted PTO drive air compressor. But since you like a challenge, and you’re passionate about safety and security, you’ll enjoy taking extra precautions to ensure your tow-behind is not stolen. Channel your inner Kevin McCallister in Home Alone and have some fun setting up booby traps every time you need to park your vehicle.

4. LOTS OF ENGINE MAINTENANCE

engine-tow-behind-air-compressorTow-behind air compressors come with their own engine, in addition to the engine that’s part of the service truck or van that’s doing the towing. This means that you’ll have two engines to maintain, and you’ll spend more time and money making sure both engines are in tip-top shape.

Several mobile air compressors use the vehicle’s existing power sources to run, such as gas and diesel vehicle engines, transmissions, or PTOs that run hydraulics, but where’s the fun in only maintaining one engine?

3. SPEND MORE TIME WORKING ON EACH JOB

Tow-behind air compressors take time to position properly and set up on the jobsite. They require a lot more prep work than a vehicle-mounted mobile air compressor. If you enjoy spending additional time each day setting up your equipment before you actually start to work, then a tow-behind is a great option.

2. USE MORE FUEL, INCREASE YOUR TRUCK’S WEIGHT

Tow-behind air compressors are beasts. They’re thirsty monsters when it comes to fuel, when you account for the extra consumption to run the tow-behind, as well as the extra fuel your truck will use to lug a 1,000+ lb air compressor. Your local gas station attendants will love seeing your truck and trailer chugging into the station for another big sale!

Speaking of weight, do you like adding extra weight to your truck? If so, you’re in luck—even though the Atlas Copco XAS 110 is considered to be a smaller sized tow-behind air compressor, producing up to 110 CFM, it still weighs 1,100 lb. It’s much heavier than the UNDERHOOD™ 150 air compressor, which weighs in at only 200 lb.

1. STAY TRADITIONAL WITH YOUR 1980s COMPRESSOR

tow-behind-air-compressorAnd the number one best reason to keep your tow-behind air compressor is that you are a traditionalist! You enjoy the nostalgia of using the tow-behind. All the extra time spent driving around, setting it up, maintaining it, and keeping it safe is time well spent! The challenges driving, maneuvering, and parking build up your character. And of course, you love utilizing your truck hitch to carry around your 1,000+ lb tow-behind.

Do you have second thoughts about keeping your tow-behind air compressor? There’s another option. Vehicle mounted air compressors are the right choice for people who:

  •     Need mobile air regularly
  •     Have light to medium duty applications
  •     Want more space for cargo, tools, and other equipment
  •     Prefer less weight on their vehicles
  •     Want to minimize maintenance
  •     Desire the freedom and convenience of trailer-free driving
If this sounds like you, then consider our sister article: 9 Reasons To Ditch Your Tow-Behind.

The Evolution of the Harbor Landscaper Pro Body

Our original Harbor Master Landscaper Body has evolved. Our customers are always looking for better ways and we are adapting our bodies to meet those needs. We now have three Harbor Landscaper Bodies in our lineup. First, we have the original Master Landscaper that comes with MDO Plywood Gates with dual side exterior laminate, Rear latch swing away rear steel frame gates that lock to side for dumping.

To that great body, we have added the Harbor Pro Landscaper which adds a back of cab 24" storage box that is about cab high. The curbside of the box has three shelves and a pull-out deep steel drawer on Teflon® bushings. This compartment goes almost all the way to the other side so it will carry long tools, gardening equipment, etc. and keep it safe and out of sight.

The other side has a 22" deep compartment for smaller items and/or parts. It is available with one or more underbed boxes to match for additional space. Since this 24" box is in place, a typical 84" CA truck that would take a 12' Landscaper, now would have a 10' Landscape Dump and the 24" storage box. Many customers still prefer the 12' and this just requires the cab chassis to have a 108" CA. The Pro Landscaper has the same MDO Plywood sides and rear gate as the Master Landscaper.

Tongue Weight Safety Demonstration

Proper trailer tongue weight improves the vehicle and trailer towing experience by improving performance. Not enough tongue weight or force on the hitch/tow ball causes an increase in trailer sway from side to side, making it difficult to control. Conversely, too much tongue weight or force on the hitch/tow ball could overload the rear tires of the towing vehicle, pushing the rear end of the vehicle around. This could also negatively affect the vehicle handling. Performance is impaired as you might not be able to go around corners and curves properly, and your vehicle may not stop quickly enough when you press the brake pedal. The Weigh Safe Drop Hitch effectively measures the tongue weight of your towing load, improving the vehicle tow load balance and performance.

Winter Tire Test: Some Treads Are Better Than Others

By Bruce W. Smith

Every so often I find myself checking out the tires of the vehicles around me when stopped in traffic, wondering how this or that one performs compared to the factory tires on my pickup truck. My questions become even more pointed in winter: Should I invest in a set of winter tires? Would mud tires be a good choice or all-terrain? Would it be worth the investment to buy a dedicated snow tire and run them half the year?

To find out, we went to the snow-covered hills just a few miles outside Steamboat Springs, Colo. Carved into the deep snow were three perfectly groomed snow courses with big berms and a variety of twists, turns and elevation changes. These tracks are the training grounds for the Bridgestone Winter Driving School. They also serve as the perfect location to test tires — and for us to see how popular pickup tire tread patterns compare when pitted against each other under controlled winter driving conditions.

And even though it's spring, the information we're offering here should help you decide what kind of tires you want next winter.

The Contenders
We spent two days this past winter with Woody Rogers and T.J. Campbell, product information specialists for Tire Rack, comparing popular 275/65R18 tires on a twisting, curving half-mile section of track three behind the wheel of two identical 2016 Ford F-150 4x4s. The tire comparison contenders were:

  • Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude HT OWL SL (P-metric)
  • Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 SL (P-metric)
  • Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice WRT LT (E load range)
  • BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 RWL LT (C load range)
  • Firestone Destination MT LT (E load range)

Selecting The Correct Venturo Crane

HT66-Build-007

Three Steps to Help Determine What Venturo Crane Best Fits a Given Situation:

Determine What Size of Crane is Needed based on Foot Pound Rating required.

  • Foot Pound Rating — based on Foot Pound Rating required. To find out what the foot pound rating should be —find out the weight of the max load that will be lifted & what would be the max distance that load will be moved away from the center line of the crane—Using those two numbers you can determine Foot Pound Rating by multiplying those numbers together — the resulting number would be the foot pound rating of the size of the crane needed.
  • Note: Venturo HT and ET cranes are numbered in Foot Pound Ratings—ie—ET12 is 12,000 foot pound crane / HT25 is a 25,000 foot pound crane / HT50 is 50,000 foot pound rated crane; etc.
Example 1: Max weight to be lifted is 5000 lbs. The crane has to take 5000 lbs. a distance of 10’ away from the center line of the crane. 5000 lbs. x 10 feet would be 50,000 which would mean a 50,000 foot pound rated crane is needed which would be a Venturo HT50.
Example 2: Max weight to be lifted is 1390 lbs. The crane has to take 1390 lbs. a distance of 8’ away from the center line of the crane. 1390 lbs. x 8 feet would mean a 11,120 is needed which would mean a 12,000 foot pound crane is needed, so an ET12 would work in this application.

Example 3: Max weight to be lifted is 2100 lbs. The crane has to take 2100 lbs. a distance of 11’ away from the center line of the crane. 2100 lbs. x 11 feet would mean a 23,100 foot pound rated crane is needed which would mean an ET25 or HT25 would fit this application.
Some HT & ET models have the same max lifting capacity ratings:

HT25 & ET25 — max lifting capacity of 5000 lbs. @ 5 feet from the center line of the crane.

HT30 & ET30 — max lifting capacity of 5000 lbs. @ 6 feet from the center line of the crane.

HT40 & ET36 — max lifting capacity of 6000 lbs. @ 6 feet from the center line of the crane.

What type of crane to use—a “fully hydraulic”— the Venturo HT family of cranes or an “electric-hydraulic” the Venturo ET family of cranes would be determined by the how often the crane is used and what the end user is picking up.

Harbor Truck and Van

Harbor - Truck and Van
As America’s premier manufacturer of service and platform bodies (and now van interiors), we enjoy a long history of “industry-first” design innovations dedicated to making your job easier and more productive.
Our bodies are loaded with more industry-first innovations than any other company in the industry. Some examples are:
  • Stainless Steel Pop-Top Lids that are self-opening with the pull of a single lever (plus, they are impervious to the elements);
  • Modern Gas Shock door stays on all vertical doors;
  • Use of Teflon Glides on our telescoping Cargo Bed Enclosures (instead of roller bearings that irritatingly seize up) that glide open with the push of a single finger;
  • Push-Button Locks with a visible red band on the door lock telling you your door is not secured…if the red band shows, push in the button. Now your tools are secure;
  • Bumper step depth is 8 inches minimum and deep enough to give your boot a firm purchase on the bumper without slipping off. This makes for easy access to tools or materials from the bed area or rack. Hard to say why no one thought of this before! By the way, these bumpers are made of formed channel and are the heaviest duty in the industry!
These are but a few examples of Harbor’s industry-first inventions that many other companies have now adopted.

With so many van accessories to choose from, the best way to find which ones work for you is to take some time to consider your needs. All tradesmen work differently, and every trade has their own basic tools. Make a list of all the equipment that you use daily. Consider ladders, large and small parts, and inventory. With a list in hand, you’ll be able to visualize your needs and determine which of the van accessories below will be the most beneficial.

Van Accessories for Organization:

Paper holdersbottle holders and reel holders are designed to increase organization by giving you a specific spot to store your equipment. Instead of rolling loose on the floor, your bottles and reels can be fastened down and within easy reach from the door. As for your paperwork and files, keep them all together in a paper holder where they won’t get ripped or crumpled.
Partskeepers are a great way to keep your smallest parts together and secured. With small, dividable bins, they offer a great storage system to take with you onto the job site. Sturdy yet lightweight, you can never have too many Partskeepers for your tools.
Storage bins are available in several sizes, and can be accessorized with bin dividers. These are ideal for holding items and inventory so you can find what you need quickly and easily. Like the Partskeepers, if you have many items to carry with you on the job, then these bins are the ideal solution.
Hooks come in several different styles and can be used to organize tools and equipment near the van doors to be most effective. Hard hat holders can keep frequently used hats within easy reach and safely stowed while on the road.

Van Accessories for Driver Comfort & Safety:

Lighting keeps the cargo space bright, making it easy to find your tools, no matter what time of day or night. It also eliminates any chance of receiving cuts and bruises when searching through your tools in the dark.
Rear Steps are extremely beneficial for tradesmen with high roof vans. Climbing in and out several times a day can put quite a strain on your legs and back, especially when carrying heavy items at the same time. The steps also provide a rugged grip in the winter, so there is no fear of slipping when getting in or out.
Grab Handles, like the rear steps, are designed to provide you with easier access into your van. Whether installed in a high roof of low roof work van, it is always useful to have something to hold onto. It can also be used to tie down additional cargo for safe transportation.
Flettner vents help protect you from any gasses/vapors or smells that may build up in the cargo area of your vehicle. It helps reduce heat build-up and allows moisture to escape should any materials or tools be stored while they are still wet. It is a simple way to stay healthy while working.

Van Accessories for Vehicle Security:
Lockable Doors and Drawers provide two advantages. They can better protect your inventory and tools by keeping them in one place on the rougher roads. Also, they can deter thieves and protect valuable tools while you’re on the job and your work van is left unattended.
Wire grills for your windows can also protect you against theft as well as prevent damage to the van during loading or unloading. They are an easy install and such a simple product that just might help save you a lot of money in the future.
Seat Covers help keep your work van seats clean and in good condition. Instead of getting dirt and grease on your seats and staining them permanently, use custom-fit covers that can be easily removed and washed. Come time to sell your vehicle, you will be grateful you kept them in such good condition.

GMC 2020 Change Points: Bold Design, Smart Technologies and New Standard Safety Features

2020 GMC Family
DETROIT  GMC strengthened its 2020 truck and SUV lineup with premium, bold styling and smarter technologies. GMC raises the bar by adding standard safety features to Terrain and offering the first-ever AT4 Acadia. Acadia joins Sierra 1500 and Sierra Heavy Duty as the newest addition to the AT4 sub-brand, which will be available across the entire GMC lineup in the next two years. The successful rollout of GMC’s next generation pickups continues with the addition of innovative features to the Sierra 1500 and the launch of an all-new Sierra Heavy Duty.
Terrain
GMC’s small SUV is updated for 2020 with GMC Pro Safety on all trim levels, an expanded standard safety package that includes:
  • Automatic Emergency Braking.
  • Forward Collision Alert.
  • Lane Keep Assistance with Lane Departure Warning.
  • Following Distance Indicator.
  • Front Pedestrian Braking.
  • IntelliBeam Headlamps.
This new set of standard safety is complemented by an optional Driver Alert Package that includes Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera, Lane Change Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Rear Park Assist and Safety Alert Seat. Denali models add Front Park Assist in addition to the Rear Park Assist.
Denali models of the premium compact SUV get multiple updates, including a new Denali Premium Package that combines the Advanced Safety Package and Comfort Package to include Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera, ventilated driver and front passenger seats and heated rear seats, among other premium features. The 2020 Terrain Denali is also differentiated from other models by a premium suspension that includes new internal valves to deliver a more refined ride, in addition to unique spring isolators that already contribute to reduced road noise compared to other Terrains.
The popular Terrain Black Edition, which adds 19-inch glass-black wheels and darkened details, has been renamed the Terrain Elevation Edition. It will continue to be offered with Summit White, Graphite Gray Metallic or Ebony Twilight Metallic paint.
Acadia
The Acadia’s fresh look for 2020 was announced earlier this year. It goes on sale in late summer, with new distinctive design, standard advanced safety equipment and technology advancements. Exterior design updates include a bold new grille, new front and rear facias, standard LED lighting and signature GMC C-shape lighting, complemented with interior refinements. Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Park Assist are now standard on all trims.
GMC offers more customer choice, introducing the first-ever Acadia AT4 with more aggressive exterior styling and darkened finishes and a new 2.0L Turbocharged engine standard on SLT models.
A new nine-speed automatic transmission is now standard for the 2.0L, 2.5L and 3.6L engines, and ride and handling are enhanced with all-new suspension refinements. Additionally, the 2020 Acadia is the latest GMC with Electronic Precision Shift replacing the conventional shifter.
Additional technology enhancements include:
  • New GMC infotainment system.
  • New head-up display (late availability).
Sierra
The 2020 Sierra offers premium, segment-leading features with the addition of the 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine and the expansion of its carbon fiber bed and 10-speed automatic transmission. Sierra 2020 is the first full model year availability of the CarbonPro Edition with the carbon fiber bed, available on AT4 and Denali.
Other available tech additions include an upgraded ProGrade Trailering System that features a segment-leading 15 total available camera views, including a segment-first transparent trailer view (accessory equipment required). Adaptive Cruise Control – Camera is also added for 2020. The system features a single high-mounted camera behind the rearview mirror and can bring the Sierra to a complete stop.
Additional 2020 Sierra changes are outlined here.

All-New Sierra Heavy Duty
The all-new Sierra Heavy Duty — which commenced production earlier this summer — adds innovation where it matters, combining greater trailering capability with technologies designed to provide customers with added confidence while towing up to a class-leading 35,500 pounds on 3500 Regular Cab, long box, two-wheel-drive, DRW diesel models.
Features include:
  • Available Enhanced ProGrade Trailering system featuring class-leading available 15 camera views, including a segment-first transparent trailer view to virtually see through a trailer in tow (accessory equipment required). Also available on 2020 Sierra 1500.
  • Available smart trailer integration, designed to integrate the iN∙Command® Control System from ASA Electronics1, provides the ability to monitor and control select functions of compatibly equipped trailers through the myGMC mobile app2.
  • Segment-first available 15-inch-diagonal head-up display offers useful trailering information, including vehicle speed, navigation information and an inclinometer display for the road grade.
  • Available segment-first Rear Camera Mirror.
It’s not only in-vehicle technology enhancements that provide customers with a world-class towing experience, the new Sierra Heavy Duty also marks the introduction of the first-ever Allison 10-speed automatic transmission mated to the legendary 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel, offering high torque, high power, low noise and exceptional durability.
For those looking to take refined capability off-road, GMC fortifies the new AT4 brand with an all-new Sierra AT4 Heavy Duty available for Crew Cab configurations as both a 2500 and 3500 single rear wheel offering. Additionally, the world’s first six-function MultiPro tailgate is available on all trims and standard on SLT, AT4 and Denali.
Canyon
The 2020 Canyon adds new features including a standard Tire Fill Alert that provides an audible, visual indication when tire pressure is added, as well as a new available remote locking tailgate.
The All Terrain trim expands package and feature availability by adding Driver Alert package, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning. The addition of a Carbon Black Metallic exterior color choice rounds out Canyon’s model year updates.
