GMC U.S. Deliveries Up 12 Percent: Best May Since 2004

Acadia’s best month ever;
total Terrain sales up 11 percent, Sierra up 4 percent

DETROIT – GMC’s sales momentum in the U.S. far outpaced the industry in May on the strength of its crossovers and the brand’s reputation for precision design, execution, technology and capability. Sierra, Canyon, Terrain and Acadia all saw growth as more customers discover the premium attributes that define GMC.

GMC sold 50,657 trucks, sport-utility vehicles and vans in the U.S. in May – up 12 percent from a year ago and its best month of the year. Retail sales of 43,151 represented an 11-percent year-over-year increase, for GMC’s best retail May since 2004. The strong increases in May give GMC 16 consecutive months of year-over-year retail growth.

Total sales of the GMC Sierra were up 3.6 percent over a very successful May 2014, for its best May since 2007. Total Canyon sales were up 19 percent – its best month of the year – compared to April as production of the new midsize pickup continues to ramp up to meet customer demand. Sierra and Canyon have the highest average transaction prices in their respective segments, according to J.D. Power PIN data, and more than half of Canyon buyers (55 percent) are new to the brand.

For the year, total GMC sales are up 15 percent, its best sales performance since 2005.

“Our continued growth reflects customers’ appreciation for the precision that distinguishes the GMC brand,” said Duncan Aldred, U.S. vice president of GMC marketing. “Buyers also are responding enthusiastically to the Canyon as it continues to redefine the midsize pickup segment and bring new buyers into GMC showrooms.”

Acadia retail and total sales jumped 75 percent and 67 percent, respectively for its best month ever. Total sales of the Terrain small SUV rose 11 percent for its best May ever.

Yukon total sales were up 9 percent from April but down 21 percent year over year. Last May, previous-generation Yukon models were being sold down in preparation for the introduction of current generation Yukon and Yukon XL models.

Customers continue to cite exterior styling, overall quality, ample seating capacity, premium amenities and positive previous GMC ownership experiences as their reasons for purchasing a GMC.

Retail sales of the Denali luxury trim level make up 21 percent of the brand’s overall sales, nearly half of Sierra HD sales, 53 percent of Yukon sales and more than 60 percent of Yukon XL sales.

GMC has manufactured trucks since 1902, with innovation and engineering excellence built into all GMC vehicles. The brand is evolving to offer more fuel-efficient trucks and crossovers, including the Terrain small SUV and Acadia crossover. GMC’s highest-volume vehicle, the Sierra pickup, is the most powerful light-duty pickup on the market, and the first full-size pickup to receive the highest-possible five-star Overall Vehicle Score for safety since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration changed its New Car Assessment Program for the 2011 model year. GMC Interactive Canyon Experience

Ever wondered what a new pickup might look like sitting in your driveway?

Thanks to GMC’s interactive Canyon Experience, you can find out without having to finance a new vehicle. Canyon Experience lets customers virtually “test drive” a Canyon in four lifestyle environments starting from their neighborhood – or anywhere else.

The Canyon Experience is the first with Google Maps and Google Street View technology that lets users “see” a Canyon in their neighborhood, close to their home.

“The Canyon Experience will appeal to the variety of lifestyles and interests of our very diverse audience,” says Kenn Bakowski, Canyon marketing manager. “Customers can learn about the various Canyon attributes that interest them, including capability, safety, the quiet cabin, connectivity and more.

When customers visit the site, they can choose different scenarios for their Canyon test drives – city, shore, mountains and rural. They can even ‘park’ a new Canyon close to their home to see how it looks, and share it socially.

“We set out to engage potential Canyon customers in a fun, creative way,” says Bakowski.

The Canyon Experience is designed to connect with customers in the early stages of the vehicle-buying process and is compatible with desktop (Internet Explorer 9 or higher), tablet and iOS and Android smartphones.

GM Advances Vehicle Theft Notification Technology

If some thief decides to take your new GM pickup for a drive while you are out of sight and earshot, your cell phone will be dancing.

OnStar Theft Notification

GM’s Theft Alarm Notification will alert OnStar subscribers their vehicle is being broken into or stolen.

Chevrolet’s Theft Alarm Notification is an enhancement to the existing Stolen Vehicle Assistance service allowing OnStar subscribers to receive a real-time alert when the vehicle’s alarm sounds.

The service will be available to eligible subscribers later this summer.

The Theft Alarm Notification feature is another enhancement to OnStar’s existing security features, which include Remote Ignition Block and Stolen Vehicle Slowdown.

With Theft Alarm Notification, OnStar subscribers can opt in to receive an alert through text, email or phone if a theft attempt triggers their vehicle’s alarm system and the alarm sounds.

“Prompt response and quick awareness of theft situations give customers a greater chance to recover stolen property,” said Sandor Piszar, director of Chevrolet Truck Marketing. “By leveraging the connection that OnStar provides, Chevrolet owners can remain in contact with their vehicle, even when it is out of sight.”

If a properly equipped Chevrolet is stolen, OnStar advisors will work with local authorities and use GPS technology to pinpoint the vehicle’s location.

In certain models, if the conditions are safe, advisors can send a signal to slow down the vehicle, aiding police officers in its recovery and preventing a potential high-speed chase.

The Theft Alarm Notification feature is included within OnStar’s Stolen Vehicle Assistance service and is available to subscribers with the Security or Guidance package and a compatible vehicle.

Most 2014 model year and newer Chevrolet vehicles are equipped to offer Theft Alarm Notification. Subscribers can confirm if their vehicle is compatible here or by speaking with an OnStar advisor.

GM Earns Highest June Retail Market Share Since 2011

•    Chevrolet retail sales up 9 percent, surpassing Ford Division
•    Chevrolet total pickup deliveries climb 33 percent; Silverado outsells F-Series on a retail basis
•    Best June ever for Chevrolet crossovers
•    GMC retail sales up 12 percent; total pickup sales up 37 percent
•    Commercial deliveries up for 20th consecutive month

DETROIT – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac dealers in the United States delivered 259,353 vehicles in June 2015. Retail deliveries climbed 7 percent year over year, and they were up more than the industry for the third month in a row. The drivers were stronger Cadillac sales, a 12 percent gain at GMC and a 9 percent increase at Chevrolet. Together, they helped make the month General Motors’ (NYSE: GM) best June for retail deliveries since 2007 and its best June for retail market share since 2011.

GM increased its sales to commercial customers, and state and local government fleets, as well. Rental deliveries, which tend to be less profitable than retail sales, were down 45 percent as a result of GM’s previously announced plan. Total fleet sales in June were down 29 percent year over year, or 21,366 units. GM’s total sales were down 3 percent.

“We just wrapped up the U.S. auto industry’s best six months in a decade, driven by strong demand for pickups and crossovers,” said Kurt McNeil, GM’s U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “People feel good about their jobs and the direction the economy as a whole is taking, so the second half of the year should be strong too, and that’s especially good news for Chevrolet and GMC, brands that have very broad truck and crossover portfolios.”

Industry sales continue to exceed expectations. GM estimates that the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles in June was 17.3 million units.
During the first half of 2015, GM gained retail market share in both the crossover and truck segments, according to J.D. Power PIN estimates. GM’s crossover share is 12.6 percent, up 0.4 percentage points compared to a year ago. GM’s truck, van and SUV share is 38.9 percent, up 2.1 percentage points.

Most of the truck market share gain comes from the ongoing success of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups, which were redesigned for the 2014 model year. Since calendar year 2013, GM’s retail share of the segment has grown 0.9 percentage points to 38 percent, according to PIN.
Market share and average transaction prices (ATPs) were particularly strong in the second quarter of 2015. According to PIN, GM’s retail share in the segment was up 2.8 points year over year to 40.2 percent. ATPs were up almost $1,000 per unit, and incentives were flat.
